19th century broken marriage.- Barlee (Francis Sarah, married to Charles Barlee, 1780-1854) Autograph Letter signed to Henry Bathurst, Bishop of Norwich, 2pp. with conjugate blank and address panel, sm. 4to, Duke's Bridge House, Bungay, Suffolk, 21st November 1833, alleging that she was entrapped in a marriage, had lost her fortune and suffered "the most dreadful hardships and privations", and describing her dispute with the clerk of the parish and the vicar who "immediately absconded", and describing the parish as "worse than Sodom & Gomorra", small tear where opened, folds, slightly browned.
⁂ It is not entirely certain whether these are sincere complaints, or the ramblings of a person with mental health problems. Barlee had been imprisoned by an ecclesiastic court for three and a half years in the 1820s for desertion of her husband.
