⁂ The author had accompanied Bruce on his Antarctic expedition to the Weddell Sea in the Scotia in 1902-04 which Bruce led instead of joining Scott's Discovery expedition. Despite being stuck in the ice for the winter they discovered Coats Land and made the first detailed study of penguins. Brown published a record of the expedition in 1906 and later this biography of his friend which included information not in the earlier work. Scarce in the dust-jacket.
