[Astell (Mary)] An Essay in Defence of the Female Sex, third edition, engraved frontispiece of 'The Compleat Beau', with name "Asgill" supplied in contemporary hand at end of dedication and beginning of commendatory verses, contemporary ink signature of Tho. Hunter at head of title, frontispiece with short tear to inner margin at foot just extending into image, title very slightly soiled, paper flaw tear to outer margin of B8 and tear to lower corner of K8 not affecting text, contemporary mottled sheep, spine gilt, rubbed, small worn patches to lower cover, [Wing D2125c], 8vo, for A.Roper...and R.Clavel, 1697.

⁂ The first English feminist tract, first published the previous year; also attributed to Judith Drake, whose brother wrote the commendatory verses at beginning.
