Description

Sterne (Jacques) The Danger arising to our Civil and Religious Liberty from the Great Increase of Papists...in a Charge deliver'd...in the Visitations held at Thirsk, Stokesley, and Malton, in the Year 1746, first edition, half-title, with additional leaf (*11-*12) mounted on stub following p.10, William Rees-Mogg's copy with his pencil signature on half-title, some other pencil notes to half-title and markings to text, browned at beginning & end and slightly frayed at edges, vertical crease where previously folded, modern half calf, red roan label, t.e.g., 4to, York, by John Gilfillan...for John Hildyard..., 1747.

⁂ Jacques Sterne (after 1680-1759) was the uncle of Laurence Sterne and became precentor of York and Archdeacon of Cleveland. He was an ardent Whig and wrote several political pamphlets in support of Walpole's administration and the Hanoverian succession. Having acted early on as a patron to his nephew, who contributed articles to a newspaper founded by him, the two men fell out over politics and became a bitter enemies.
