⁂ Jacques Sterne (after 1680-1759) was the uncle of Laurence Sterne and became precentor of York and Archdeacon of Cleveland. He was an ardent Whig and wrote several political pamphlets in support of Walpole's administration and the Hanoverian succession. Having acted early on as a patron to his nephew, who contributed articles to a newspaper founded by him, the two men fell out over politics and became a bitter enemies.
