Description

Rochester (John Wilmot, Earl of) Poems, &c. on Several Occasions: with Valentinian, a Tragedy, with the rare advertisement leaf at beginning and D3 & D7 uncancelled, title in red and black, contemporary ink inscription of Godfrey Bosville on recto of advertisement leaf, a little water- & damp-staining (worst at beginning),18th century speckled calf, red morocco label, rubbed, upper cover detached, spine worn at head, [Wing R1756], 8vo, Jacob Tonson, 1691.

⁂ Rare; the first authentic edition of Rochester's poems. Following his death in 1680 two pirated editions of his poems were published, in 1680 and 1685. This is the first edition to include 'Valentinian', a reworking of Fletcher's tragedy, also a Preface by Thomas Rymer and 'A Pastoral...bewailing the Death of the Earl of Rochester'.
