⁂ Jonathan Richardson (1667-1745) was a portrait-painter, collector of Old Master drawings and art critic. The first work is regarded as the first significant work of artistic theory in English and is reputed to have inspired both Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds; the third was used by many on the Grand Tour.
