Description

Lutyens (Sir Edwin).- Four Shop Signs for Cockington, Devon, comprising blacksmith, archer, lady with her distaff & spinning wheel, and still life with vase, teapot, jug, cup & fruit, painted metal figures, blacksmith with base, c.560 x 500mm. or smaller, mounted in shallow card boxes with lids, n.d. (4)

⁂ In 1932 the Mallock family sold their estate, including the village of Cockington, near Torquay in Devon, to the Cockington Trust who planned to extend the medieval hamlet by creating a model village with pub, tea garden and shopping centre. The Trust commissioned Sir Edwin Lutyens to design it but, despite drawing up a proposal, only the Drum Inn was built. These signs were to hang above the relevant shops. A photocopied plan of the site, from Butler's The Architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens, vol.2 plate XX & XXI, is included in the lot.
