⁂ Up until the First World War all toys such as these building blocks were of German manufacture but with the ban on German goods English firms started to produce similar items. E.A.Lott started selling these sets in 1918, providing jobs for ex-servicemen. The blocks in the early sets were produced in cream and red or black, later ones such as in the third set here were painted different colours and incised to denote walls, timber, doors etc.
