Description

Charles II.- Lely (Sir Peter) Manner of. Portrait of King Charles II, whole-length, seated in frontal view, pointing to left with his right hand, pen and brown ink, brown wash, black chalk under-drawing, on fine laid paper without watermark, tipped onto 18th century mount support with ruled ink and wash border inscribed 'Charles 2d. Rex./ Fr. Peter Lely fec.t', sheet 251 x 187 mm (9 7/8 x 7 3/8 in), some surface dirt and damp-staining to mount, unframed, [probably 18th century]

⁂ While the nature of the under-drawing suggests that the sheet is unlikely to be a direct copy after another, the composition appears to closely relate and borrow from a painting by Lely, executed circa 1678, which was reproduced in a mezzotint by the German printmaker Hermann Hendrik Quiter (1628-c.1708) [for an impression see BM no. 1872,1012.745].
