Description

English Reformation.- Torture & executions in the Tower.- Sanders (Nicholas) Les trois livres contenants l'origine et progrez du scisme d'Angleterre, edited by Edward Rishton, first edition in French, title with small woodcut ornament, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, occasional minor marginal worming, some spotting or foxing, lightly browned, 20th century notes on the work to rear pastedown (mostly in pencil, but with some biro), contemporary vellum, yapp edges, cloth ties, later ink title to head of spine, upper corner of lower cover little worn, a few spots, [Adams S293], 8vo, [?Louvain], no printer, 1587.

⁂ A good copy of the scarce first French edition of this history of the English Reformation by the Catholic priest and polemicist Sanders (c.1530-1581). At the end it includes a list of those tortured and executed in the year 1585. We propose Louvain as the place of printing because Sanders lived there for a period and it was here that his De visibili monarchia ecclesiae was published in 1571.
