Aerostatics.- Lana Terzi (Francesco) Prodromo ouero saggio di alcune inuentiuoni nuoue...per mostrare li piu reconditi principij della naturale filosofia..., first edition, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials, 20 engraved plates, first few leaves and endpapers nibbled at edges (mostly affecting endpapers), contemporary English mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco label incorrectly titled "Fausti Veranti Machinae Novae", rubbed, spine slightly worn at head, folio, [Norman 1272; Wellcome III, 440], Leopoldo I. Brescia, Rizzardi, 1670.

⁂ Important work on aerostatics containing “the earliest concept of flight based on aerostatic principles” (Dibner, Heralds of Science, 176) and a plate illustrating Lana’s design for an aerial ship. Lana Terzi (1631-87), an Italian Jesuit and associate of Kircher, was professor of physics and mathematics at Brescia.
