⁂ The first was first published in Dutch in the same year. Ceulen (1540-1610) was a German-Dutch mathematician who spent the majority of his career calculating the numerical value of pi, eventually to 35 decimal places. In Germany pi is still sometimes known as the "Ludolphine number".
