⁂ The first item is the first printing of the Domesday Book, William I's "Great Survey" of England recording every piece of land with details of its lord, labour and livestock. It was printed in "record type" designed by John Nichols and cut by Joseph Jackson (previously an apprentice to Caslon) to represent the particulars of medieval manuscripts but did not include any supplementary material or indices. These were issued later, in 1816.
