Description

Welsh classical scholar & clergyman.- Williams (John, Archdeacon of Cardigan, schoolmaster and classical scholar, 1792-1858) [4 Volumes of notes on Greek and Latin classics, religion, 'Materis superabat opus' & 'Extracts of Letters "Anent" the "Cromlech Question"' compiled as a student at Balliol College, Oxford & as Vicar of Lampeter], 4 vol., manuscript in English, Welsh, Latin and Greek, together c. 315pp. excluding blanks, in two hands (mostly John Williams autograph), reverse entries, a few ink portrait doodles, some ff. excised, a few ff. wholly or partly torn away with small loss of text (1 fly-leaf defective), some others loose, browned, variously morocco and calf-backed boards, worn, all but one spines defective, 2 upper covers detached, sm. 4to, [1810-20]; Permanency of God's Word, manuscript, 19pp., central folds, browned, original wrappers with manuscript note: "This Sermon is a literal translation from the Welsh original preached... by John Williams M.A. The Archdeacon informed me that he considered the Sermon his Masterpiece", sm. 4to, [c. 1855]; and a small quantity of other manuscript notes, including: a draft of the Last Will of Williams father, John Williams, Vicar of Ystradmeurig in Cardiganshire (1745-1818); a volume of genealogical notes compiled by Williams daughter, Laetitia Cunliffe and a quantity later letters and notes on the Cunliffe family, v.s., v.d. (qty).

⁂ Subjects include: Greek Verbs, Oedipus Tyrannus, Notices respecting Ecbatana Herodotus... ; Arrian [on Alexander the Great], Pliny, To Castlereagh, Dyfed's Invitation, The Oxford Liturgy, Remarks on the Lines of the Philosophers by Diogenes Laertius, Concerning the Old Arabian Philosophy, Concerning the Indian Philosophy etc.

Most of the Archdeacon's papers were lost at sea after his death en route to India where two of his daughters were living and working. It is not clear why these papers were not sent to India.
