⁂ The first full exposition of a universal language in English, containing sections on the origin of languages and letters, the theory of grammar and phonetics and their relation to universal language, and the proposed alphabet for Wilkins's devised universal language. Wilkins (1616-72) was the first Secretary of the Royal Society. This, his most important work, was prepared with the assistance of John Ray & Francis Willughby.
