Military.- Du Choul (Guillaume) Discours sur la Castrametation et Discipline Militaire des Romains…Des Bains et Antiques Exercitationes Grecques & Romaines, 2 parts in 1, first edition, title with large woodcut printer’s device, fine woodcut pictorial head-pieces and initials, first part with 37 almost full-page woodcut illustrations, folding letterpress plan of Roman camp including small woodcut illustrations (torn and laid down), second part with 5 woodcut illustrations but lacking E2 (f.18) of text, both parts lacking final blank, some soiling and staining, with 4pp. contemporary ink manuscript notes bound in at end containing several signatures of P.Foullard, engraved armorial bookplate of Military Collection of Hon. Lt. Gen. G.L.Parker, contemporary mottled sheep, spine gilt with floral motifs and red roan labels, a little rubbed, small folio, Lyons, G.Rouille, 1555.
⁂ The first part shows Roman cavalry, infantry, trumpeters, building a camp, battering rams, helmets etc. The title mentions a third part ‘De la Religion des anciens Romains’ but this was not published until the following year and is therefore not included in the book.
