⁂ Rare. The book collector and bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee described the publisher Dugdale (1800-1868) as 'one of the most prolific publishers of filthy books'. He was one of the main targets of the Obscene Publications Act of 1857. Yet, despite numerous police raids on his shops and spending many years in prison, he remained in the book trade for over forty years.
