⁂ The Savage Club was founded in October 1857, as a 'meeting of gentlemen connected with literature and the fine arts, and warmly interested in the promotion of Christian knowledge, and the ale of exciseable liquids.' Notable members have included Sir J. M. Barrie, Charlie Chaplin, Mark Twain, Wilkie Collins, Sir Edward Elgar, Sir Henry Irving, P. G. Wodehouse and Sir Peter Ustinov.
