⁂ Carstares (1649-1715) was a Scottish minister, who acted as a intelligence agent for the Prince of Orange. He was implicated in the Rye House Plot to assassinate King Charles II, and his brother James, Duke of York. He was tortured with thumbscrews, and signed this deposition, in which he managed to play down his Dutch links.
