Description

Rye House Plot.- The Deposition of William Carstares, when he was examined before the Lords of Secret Committee...upon the 22 of December 1684, bifolium, folds, some spotting or light staining, lightly browned, remains of previous modern binding to inner margin, folio, [Edinburgh], no printer, 1684.

⁂ Carstares (1649-1715) was a Scottish minister, who acted as a intelligence agent for the Prince of Orange. He was implicated in the Rye House Plot to assassinate King Charles II, and his brother James, Duke of York. He was tortured with thumbscrews, and signed this deposition, in which he managed to play down his Dutch links.
