Salt.- [Arrangements for the distribution of salt in Chambéry], broadside, woodcut arms at head, central horizontal fold, small hole to upper marginal corner, lightly spotted and browned, some creasing, 462 x 328mm., Chambéry, M.F. Gorrin, 1st October, 1768.
⁂ Rare. From its inception in 1286 the 'gabelle' or salt tax meant that salt had to be purchased at an official price and that a fixed amount had to be purchased annually by each household. This tax was hated by the French, especially as prices between regions varied drastically, with Paris for example paying 20 times more than Brittany. This naturally led to the smuggling of salt between regions.
