⁂ An account of the shipwreck of the Alceste in the Gaspar Strait, between the large islands Banca and Billiton in Indonesia, written by the ship's surgeon John M'Leod. The crew managed to reach a nearby island and, despite repeated attacks by Malay pirates, captain Murray Maxwell managed to bring all his men home without losing a single life. The party returned home as popular heroes and Maxwell was knighted for his service.
