Description

Haslewood (Joseph, editor) The Dialogues of Creatures Moralised, one of 98 copies, black letter, title with wood-engraved border of animals, with additional illustrations from woodcuts in an edition printed by Gerard Leeu at Gouda in 1481, wood-engraved initials and decorations, the dedicatee's copy with additional dedication printed in red and ink presentation inscription by the author to James Bindley cut and mounted on front free endpaper, one leaf torn and repaired, modern green morocco-backed pictorial boards drawn in pen & ink, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, printed by Bensley & Son, 1816; and a 2 vol. 1889 reprint of Caxton's edition of Aesop of 1484 (one of 550 sets), 4to & 8vo (3)

⁂ Although this was a popular work on the Continent, particularly the Low Countries, only one previous edition is known to have been published in English, in 1511. This copy is in fact one of only 42 copies as 56 were destroyed in a fire. We have been able to trace only one copy at auction, in New York in 1946 when it realised $5.
