[Prior (Matthew) & Charles Montagu.] The Hind and the Panther transvers'd to the Story of the Country-Mouse and the City-Mouse, first edition, with initial blank, a little browned, first and last pages soiled, bookplate of Ralph Edward Gathorne-Hardy, later marbled boards, rubbed, new label to upper cover, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, [Wing P3511], for W.Davis, 1687 § [Whitehead (William)] The Goat's Beard. A Fable, first edition, a little frayed at edges (reinforced), modern marbled wrappers, uncut, preserved in cloth-backed board portfolio, J.Dodsley, 1777; and a modern facsimile of Dryden's Fables, 4to & folio (3)
⁂ The first is Prior's first book, written in collaboration with his Westminster and Cambridge friend Charles Montagu, later Earl of Halifax. It is a parody of Dryden's The Hind and the Panther, which acknowledged his conversion to Roman Catholicism where the Hind represents the Catholic Church and the Panther the Church of England. Dryden's work was published in May 1687 with this parody following in July.
