Description

Aesop.- Orrery (Charles Boyle, Earl of) Dr. Bentley's Dissertations on the Epistles of Phalaris, and the Fables of Aesop, Examin'd, first edition, lacking 3 final blanks, old ink signature of Edward Synge to title, a few small ink corrections/annotations to text, from the library at Markree Castle, later embossed library stamp to title, contemporary mottled calf with double fillet and small ornaments to corners in blind, spine ruled in gilt with tan label, rubbed, joints split, spine ends a little worn, by Tho.Bennet, 1698 § Bentley (Richard) A Dissertation upon the Epistles of Phalaris. With an Answer to the Objections of the Honourable Charles Boyle, Esquire, second edition, old ink signature of C.Shipperdson to front free endpaper and engraved bookplate of Edward Shipperdson, contemporary panelled calf, rubbed, rebacked with red morocco label, corners repaired, by J.H. for Henry Mortlock..., 1699, both preserved in modern cloth drop-back boxes, [Wing O469 & B1929]; and another, 8vo (3)

?Jonathan Swift's copy. The signature in the first is that of Edward Synge (1691-1762), Bishop of Elphin, whose books were inherited by his daughter Alicia who married Joshua Cooper of Markree Castle, County Sligo. Synge was a friend of Jonathan Swift and is known to have purchased several books at the sale of Swift's library after his death in 1745. Swift owned a copy of this work (either this edition or the second edition of the same year) and its whereabouts is now unknown. It is tempting to think that this might be Swift's copy and the markings by him but the evidence is inconclusive.
