⁂ ?Jonathan Swift's copy. The signature in the first is that of Edward Synge (1691-1762), Bishop of Elphin, whose books were inherited by his daughter Alicia who married Joshua Cooper of Markree Castle, County Sligo. Synge was a friend of Jonathan Swift and is known to have purchased several books at the sale of Swift's library after his death in 1745. Swift owned a copy of this work (either this edition or the second edition of the same year) and its whereabouts is now unknown. It is tempting to think that this might be Swift's copy and the markings by him but the evidence is inconclusive.
