Aesop.- Bellamy (Daniel) Ethic Amusements, first edition, printed on fine paper with crown and fleur-de-lys watermark, engraved frontispiece after Gravelot, pictorial part-title to 'Aesop at Court; or, The Labyrinth at Versailles', plan and 41 plates and 6 illustrations by George Bickham, light offsetting from plates, occasional spotting, engraved bookplate of Lord Camden, handsome contemporary black morocco with elaborate border tooled in gilt featuring a vase containing a carnation between two columns, globes, etc., spine gilt in compartments with alternating floral ornament and lattice, red morocco label (chipped), g..e., rubbed, particularly spine and corners, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, 4to, by W.Faden, for the Author, 1768.
⁂ Including The Labyrinth of Versailles with quatrains by de Benserade and copies of Sebastien Le Clerc's plates from Perrault's version of 1677 of the fountains and mazes based on Aesop's fables, re-engraved by Bickham. This is one of only a few copies issued on fine paper with the crown and fleur-de-lys watermark. The border of the binding features similar tools to that on a Book of Common Prayer, Cambridge, 1766 (The Henry Davis Gift II: A Collection of Bookbindings [in the British Library], No.179).
