Amman (Jost) [Album of woodcuts from 'Ein neuw Thierbuch'], 105 woodcuts by Jost Amman tipped to 37 leaves, mostly three to a sheet on rectos only, some a little soiled or stained, trimmed, half-title and title drawn in pen & black ink, with signature of Luigi Navagni (the previous compiler), the printer's woodcut device and an old bookplate all tipped to another sheet at beginning, all within a red rule border, modern crimson morocco-backed striped painted boards, pen & ink label to upper cover, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, small folio, [Frankfurt, Feyeraband], [1569].
⁂ Compiled from the first edition of George Schaller's Ein neuw Thierbuch of 1569, originally by Luigi Navagni in pocket-book form and recently rebound. The woodcuts have been tipped in by subject with pages devoted to elephants, lions, camels, boar, deer, horses, goats, dogs, bears, beavers, monkeys etc. as well as individual woodcuts of unicorns, and a rhinoceros, dragon, porcupine and crocodile. Birds are bound at the end including ostriches, eagles, turkeys, and a parrot, plus mythical creatures.
