Description

Aesop. Vita et fabulae…, collation: A-S8, roman type, title with woodcut printer's device, old ink inscriptions to title and slight wear causing some loss to text, some light soiling, water-staining to upper margin of last few leaves, pen trials to verso of final leaf, a few minor marginal defects, modern book-label of Elizabeth Armstrong, contemporary blind-stamped calf with central ornament of fleurons within floral border and fleurs-de-lys to corners, a little worn, spine ends slightly defective, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, [Not in Adams, Renouard or Schreiber], 8vo (177 x 113mm.), Paris, Robert Estienne, 1534.

⁂ A good unsophisticated copy of this favourite humanist schoolbook in a contemporary binding. Unknown to Renouard, this is the third surviving Estienne edition of Aesop (previous editions 1527 & 1529) and contains fables by several others. USTC identifies only 4 copies (BL, Worcester College Library Oxford, and 2 in France).
