Chesterfield (Philip Dormer, Earl of) Letters written ... to his Son Philip Stanhope, Esq, 2 vol., first edition, first issue, with 'quia uroit' line 16, p. 55, vol. 1 uncorrected, half-titles, engraved portrait frontispiece to vol. 1 only, occasional faint spotting, bookplates, ALs and additional note signed F. Bowes Lyon pasted to front pastedown, contemporary calf, expertly rebacked retaining original backstrip, a little rubbed, 4to, for J. Dodsley, 1774.
⁂ Provenance: Bookplate of Marguerite, Countess of Blessington (1789-1849) to front pastedowns. Bookplate, ink ALs and pencil note of Francis Bowes Lyon (1856-1948) the paternal Uncle of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and paternal Great Uncle of Queen Elizabeth II.
The ink note on notepaper headed 'Ridley Hall, Bardon Mill, Northumberland' is dated 17th Sept. 26 and read, "herewith enclose - I am glad the books arrived safely. Yours truly F. Bowes Lyon. P.S. Maria, Countess of Blessington (from whom my Grandmother Lady Glamis acquired the books) was you may remember, a great friend of Lord Byron."
