Description

?Sarah Siddons' copy.- [Allestree (Richard)] The New whole duty of man, lacking frontispiece, extensive ink corrections to text on pp. 449-451, short ink note to outer margin of p.469, numerous instances of passage marking in ink or pencil, occasional spotting or staining, lightly browned, contemporary dark blue morocco, gilt, corners worn, rubbed and some scuffing, g.e., 8vo, W. Bent, [?1808].

⁂ ?Sarah Siddons' copy with her passage markings and corrections. Siddons (1755-1831), Welsh actress, praised by William Hazlitt as 'tragedy personified'.

Provenance: 'Borthwick, Crookston, 1838' (ink inscriptions to front free endpaper and title), with a note by him to front free endpaper 'This copy of this admirable work belonged to the late & great Mrs. Siddons; & the markings in pencil & ink are by her hand. It passed into the possession of her daughter Mrs. George Combe, who...parted with it to...the bookseller, from whence I bought it'.
