[Newton (Sir Isaac)] [The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy], vol. 1 only (of 2), first edition in English, translated by Andrew Motte, engraved frontispiece and head-piece by A. Motte, 25 folding engraved plates, lacking title, ownership inscription "James Spedding accepted this from ?Doct. Hamilton's faithfull friend C.S., 1749" to pastedown and front free endpaper, light browning to frontispiece, plate 18 with loss to lower corner, small marginal worming to both text and plates, generally to outer corners, soiling, browning to endpapers, contemporary calf, very worn, [Babson 20; PMM 161], 8vo, [for Benjamin Motte], [1729].

⁂ First English edition of vol. 1 of Newton's Principia, considered one of the most important works in the history of science.
