China.- Tingqua (1809-1870), School of. Collection of eight views of the Treaty ports of China, watercolour and gouache on pith paper, each neatly presented with silk border and inset into cloth-covered mounts, each image approx. 160 x 260 mm (6 1/4 x 10 1/4 in), under glass, some minor scattered spotting and surface dirt, a few small splits in the pith to some, but overall condition is stable, uniformly presented in Chinese-style frames, [circa 1840].
⁂ This set of eight views of Canton and its environs is painted with the combination of observed fact and an eye for the decorative characteristic of Ting Qua and his studio. The views include: The Hongs at Canton; Macao; Whampoa Reach and Island; The forts at Bocca Tigris; The nine-stage Pagoda at Whampoa; The Dutch Folly Fort; A village on the Pearl River; Western and Chinese shipping scene.
