An important collection of anti-slavery poems and prose, including the the only substantial piece of fiction by Frederick Douglass entitled 'The Heroic Slave' (pp.120-165), which is based on the true story of an 1841 slave insurrection on the slave ship Creole, led by Madison Washington. Other African-American contributors include William G. Allen, James M. Smith, and James M. Whitfield.
