⁂ An interesting group of items relating to the Quakers and Shakers, particularly in America. Samuel Bownas (1677-1753) was a Quaker minister who travelled to America to spread the Gospel but was imprisoned on Long Island for preaching, being released after a year. The second work includes encounters with Native Americans and with Elizabeth Hanson who had been held captive with her children and whose story he later published in 1760. John Woolman (1720-72) was an American merchant, Quaker preacher, and early abolitionist during the colonial era. The final work concerns the Shakers in America.
Joseph Fry (1728-87) founded the Bristol branch of the noted Quaker Fry and the family chocolate company which became J.S.Fry & Sons.
