⁂ I: Allen (1775-1826) was born in Providence, Rhode Island. After graduating from Brown University he moved to Boston, where he edited periodicals and a history of the Lewis & Clark expedition written by the banker Nicholas Biddle. He went on to edit the Baltimore Chronicle until his death. Thomas Jefferson admired his prose. II: Wilkinson was the father-in-law of British economist David Ricardo.
