Equality of the Sexes.- [Poullain de la Barre (François)] De l'Excellence des Hommes, contre l'Egalité des Sexes, first edition, title with large woodcut monogram, with final blank, some light foxing, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt, rubbed, lacking small portion from head of spine, 12mo, Paris, Jean du Puis, 1675.

⁂ The third in a trilogy of works on the subjugation of women by a follower of Descartes: De l’Égalité des Deux Sexes, 1673, De l’Éducation des Dames, 1674 and De l’Éxcellence des Hommes, 1675. Despite the title of this final work it is a reinforcement of his belief that men are not superior to women, and was influential on later feminist thought.
