Voyages.- Northcote the Younger (Samuel, 1743-1813) 'The Penguine from the Faukland Islands', etching, on laid paper without watermark, signed and indistinctly dated in the plate 'Dec. 1[?]769', hinged into mount, with additional impression verso, the sheet with browning and surface dirt, small nicks and tears to extremities, unframed, [circa 1760-1790]
⁂ Possibly the only known impression of this print by James Northcote's older brother. While unlikely to have been studied from life, it is possible that the Plymouth-based Northcote drew inspiration from the prints and drawings of George Edwards, alongside contemporary first hand accounts, in order to create this rather accurate and charming depiction of the smallest of the Falklands penguin, the Southern Rockhopper.
