⁂ Silas Deane (1738-89) served as American ambassador to France from 1776-77 and is responsible for much of the foreign support for the colonial cause, including the negotiation of the 1778 Treaty of Amity. This pamphlet is a defence of the author's conduct during his mission to France after he had been accused of taking gifts from the French and had misused funds. Deane would die a mysterious death in 1789 before having the chance to clear his name.
