Description

Levant.- Du Loir (Nicolas) Les Voyage [sic] du Sieur du Loir ensemble de ce qui se passa à la mort du seu Sultan Mourat dans le Serrail, les ceremonies de ses funerailles; & celles de l'avenement à l'Empire de Sultan Hibraim son frere, qui luy succeda..., first edition, title with woodcut printer's device, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, errata leaf at end, repair to head of title affecting "Les", title inner margin reinforced, a few ink corrections and stains affecting text, a couple of marginal tears, some light spotting, later vellum, slightly soiled, [Blackmer 511], 4to, Paris, Francois Clouzier, 1654.

Du Loir, whose first name is only known through a contemporary manuscript inscription in the copy at the Bodleian, travelled to Constantinople in 1639 in the retinue of the French ambassador to the Porte, Jean de la Haye. The work is a collection of 10 letters addressed to high-ranking Frenchmen, and is of interest not only in regards to his voyage to Constantinople, and the various peoples and customs he encountered, but also for his transliterations into the Latin alphabet and the translation into French of various Ottoman and Arabic texts. These include verses from the Koran (5th letter) and Dija ed-Din Ibrahim's narrative of the siege of Bagdad in 1639 (8th letter). This is the first edition with the variant title "omitting the words 'Contenus... Sujets'" (Blackmer).
