[Sorel (Charles)] [The Extravagant Shepherd: or, the History of the Shepherd Lysis. An Anti-Romance], four engraved plates by Jan Baptist Gaspars, of which 2 bound as frontispieces, 1 being a whole-page illustration and the 4th being double-page, the frontispieces silked, one of these and the double slightly trimmed, woodcut decorations and initials, lacking title (supplied in modern facsimile), dated 1654), closed tear A2 without loss, ?2 of the plates slightly some faint browning and minor staining, modern calf-backed cloth, [Wing S4704A], small folio, [?1660].
⁂ The plates are mentioned by Hodnett in his bibliography 'Francis Barlow: first master of English book illustration', wherein he describes Gaspars [Jaspars] as the most talented book illustrator resident in England in the 17th century, besides Cleyn, Hollar and Barlow (pp.50-51). Facsimile title dated 1654, but with the whole-page engraved illustration at e2v as in 1660 edition. Rare in any edition at auction.
