⁂ On April 8, the Prince of Wales had married Princess Caroline of Brunswick, separating from her almost immediately. Heavily in debt, he had become the subject of investigation and debate by Parliament during May; and on June 26 Pitt's proposals for liquidating his debts received the royal assent.
