⁂ The first is a translation of Tai T'ung's Liu shu ku or The History of the Six Writings, an important work on the origins of the Chinese language. Lionel Charles Hopkins (1854-1952), brother of the poet Gerald Manley Hopkins, served in the British consular service in China from 1874 until the early 20th century. He became an authority on Chinese linguistics and palaeography, assembling a notable collection of oracle bones which he donated to Cambridge University.
