Burton (Sir Richard Francis) Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El Medinah and Meccah, 3 vol., first edition, half-title in vol.3 only as called for, 4 maps and plans (3 folding), 14 plates (5 chromolithographs, 8 tinted lithographs, 1 wood-engraving), bound without publisher's catalogue at end of vol.1, a few plates lightly offset, others with tissue guards, bookplates removed, contemporary half calf, a little rubbed, [Abbey, Travel 368; Penzer pp.49-50], 8vo, 1855-56.

⁂ Disguised as a Muslim pilgrim, Burton was one of the first westerners to visit Mecca and other holy Islamic sites. "One of the greatest works of travel ever published" (Penzer).
