⁂ Harold Abrahams, whose exploits are famously recounted in the film Chariots of Fire, won the 100m at the 1924 Olympic Games; Roger Bannister was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes, at Iffley Road track in Oxford on 6th May 1954.
