⁂ Important work on the health and conditions of sailors on board ship, with accounts of the various diseases encountered and recommendations for improvements in living conditions and sanitation. The work led to the adoption of taking limes to sea as a prevention against scurvy and of smallpox vaccination amongst sailors.
