Description

Ariosto (Lodovico) Orlando Furioso in English heroical verse, by Iohn Haringto[n], first edition in English, double column, 45 full-page engraved illustrations only (of 46), extra-illustrated with c.8 tipped-in duplicates of illustrations seemingly from a later edition (lacking illustration on A1v similarly supplied) and c.14 other tipped-in engraved illustrations, 'The Argument' of each book within woodcut cartouche, woodcut initials, errata at end, lacking ¶1 (title), A1 and 2O4 (final f.), title leaf supplied in manuscript, with ?imprint from 2O4 trimmed and laid down beneath, trimmed at head, a few times affecting headline, a few ff. with chips or short tears, most marginal and repaired but with occasional loss to a few words, some plates trimmed close at fore-edge, a few times touching image, a couple with small hole or tear, some light staining, 18th and 19th century ink ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper, later calf, worn, upper cover detached, [STC 746; Pforzheimer 447], 4to, 1591.

⁂ The handsomely illustrated first English edition of this Italian epic poem. The illustrations are copies of those cut by Giralomo Porro for Ruscelli's edition of Venice, 1584.
