Alchemy.- Ulstadt (Philipp) Coelum philosphorum, seu liber de secretis naturae, second Lyons edition, title with woodcut printer's device, woodcut illustrations of furnaces, distillation apparatus etc., some full-page, with the final blank, old ink signature to head of title, some ink underlinings, occasional spotting or browning, a few small stains, cropped with slight loss to a few side-notes, ink presentation "S.M.C. from H.P.B. 1900" to front pastedown, contemporary blind-stamped calf, rubbed, rebacked preserving old red morocco label, new endpapers, [cf.Adams U54; Ferguson II.482], 12mo in 8s, Lyons, Guillaume Rouille, 1557.

⁂ Second Lyons printing of this popular work on distillation by a Nuremberg physician, first published in 1525. It contains detailed descriptions of the preparation and use of distillates, for apothecaries, surgeons and doctors, as well as recipes for wines and spirits.
