Bob Dylan: From Songwriter to Visual Storyteller

Bob Dylan’s foray into art is not a late career diversion but a long-standing pursuit. He has been sketching and painting since the 1960s, developing a visual practice rooted in the same storytelling instincts that shaped his music. His images capture the textures of American life highways stretching into the distance, bridges looming over cityscapes, diners glowing under neon signs and many other visionary approaches.

Lot 7: Bob Dylan (b.1941), Train Tracks (The Silkscreen Collection) (Large) (2019), Screenprint in colours, 2019, signed in pencil, numbered from the edition of 195 | Estimate £6,000-8,000 (+ fees)

Other works, such as Classic Car Show, Cleveland, OH (2016) and Flat Top Mt. Diner, Tennessee (2017), extend this fascination with Americana, blending nostalgia with the grit of lived experience. More recent pieces such as Prize Fight (2023) from the Deep Focus series, demonstrate his evolving range, translating cinematic stills into vivid painterly reinterpretations. The auction also includes multiple Lots showcasing train tracks, where Dylan revisits one of his most enduring motifs: the railway as a symbol of travel, destiny, and change. Each edition is signed and meticulously produced, affirming Dylan’s commitment to his craft beyond the stage.

Johnny Depp: A Collector Turned Creator

While Bob Dylan’s art has been celebrated for decades, actor and musician Johnny Depp has more recently established himself as a serious visual artist. Known primarily for his film career, Depp’s exploration in the world of art reflects his interest in cultural icons and his personal heroes. His striking screenprint of Bob Dylan, from Friends and Heroes (2022) captures the songwriter with bold lines and colours, a fitting tribute from one artist to another. Depp’s transition into fine art has been met with enthusiasm, and his works have quickly entered private and public collections worldwide.

Ronnie Wood: Rock ’n’ Roll on Canvas

Few embody the seamless fusion of music and art as fully as Ronnie Wood. Best known as guitarist for the Rolling Stones, Wood trained at Ealing Art College before his music career took flight. Throughout his life, he has continued painting, creating dynamic works that channel the same energy as his performances. In this auction, his Electric Horses (Canvas Edition) (2013), hand-embellished with diamond dust, offers a dazzling example of his signature style; rhythmic, colourful, and unmistakably rock ’n’ roll.

Collecting Legends

Together, these works represent more than celebrity crossover. They showcase how creativity transcends, and how musicians like Dylan, Depp, and Wood have used visual art to express facets of themselves beyond sound. Each piece is both a collectible and a testament to the enduring cultural influence of rock ’n’ roll’s great figures.

With a selection of signed editions including rare large-format works, this auction presents an exceptional opportunity for collectors to engage with a different side of modern icons.
