His most popular and successful work, the novel Lord of the Flies (1954) was preceded only by a volume of poetry Poems (1935). The novel is still studied by many schoolchildren and students of English Literature. Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983 and was knighted 5 years later.
