Achieved fame and infamy with his stand-out novel Lolita (1955) which was published in Paris and concerns a middle-aged man who becomes sexually obsessed with his under-age step-daughter. He was born in Russia but after his family fled following the Russian Revolution in 1919 he lived and worked in Europe before emigrating to America.
