Gained success with his first novel The Collector (1963), but his popularity increased significantly with The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969) which was made into a critically-acclaimed film in 1981 with screenplay by Harold Pinter, starring Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep and with music by Carl Davis.
